K-6 science must be hands-on science. To learn about magnets children must explore with magnets. To learn about electricity they must build electrical circuits using batteries, bulbs, and wire. To learn about rocks they need assorted rocks to observe and test. To investigate microscopic worlds they need hand lenses and microscopes. Interacting with materials and supplies is at the heart of learning science, of inquiry, and of constructing concepts. Just as we would never teach reading without books, we should never teach science without supplies. Materials, supplies, and equipment are absolutely essential for learning science.
