Seville 2003 School Goals



On November 9, 2003, seven international school leaders (directors, principals, and teacher leaders) representing four MAIS schools in two countries met at the Hotel Sol Melia in Seville, Spain to identify ways for improving their schools’ K-6 programs in science education. Following is a listing of the self-identified needs expressed as goals.

The American School of Las Palmas

1.) Write clear objectives based on NSES Standards
2.) Decide on best resources for each grade level
3.) Give time to promote self help among faculty
4.) Invite a Standards Team to do science workshops
5.) Create a “pool” of Internet resources
6.) Develop an science assessment strategy



Marymount International Rome
Rome, Italy

1.) Bring more hands-on investigations into the classroom
2.) Train teachers in inquiry-based science teaching
3.) Assistance in reviewing our science curriculum
4.) Plan a scope and sequence Pre-K to 12
5.) Emphasize process skills connected to literature
6.) Build up sets on science kits and lessons



The International School of Florence

1.) Complete a meaningful documentation of our program
2.) Incorporate NSES into our current curriculum
3.) Link NSES to a basic content framework PS-5
4.) Gather resources and units for central storage
5.) Identify and provide quality program development
6.) Assist staff in using inquiry teaching strategies
7.) Expand teaching and learning beyond the textbook
8.) Move toward a complete science adoption by fall 2004

2.) Aim for a more systematic and diffused inquiry approach
